Nonlinear Analysis of the Eckhaus Instability: Modulated Amplitude Waves and Phase Chaos with Non-zero Average Phase Gradient

چکیده
We analyze the Eckhaus instability of plane waves in the one-dimensional complex Ginzburg-Landau equation (CGLE) and describe the nonlinear effects arising in the Eckhaus unstable regime. Modulated amplitude waves (MAWs) are quasiperiodic solutions of the CGLE that emerge near the Eckhaus instability of plane waves and cease to exist due to saddle-node bifurcations (SN). These MAWs can be characterized by their average phase gradient ν and by the spatial period P of the periodic amplitude modulation. A numerical bifurcation analysis reveals the existence and stability properties of MAWs with arbitrary ν and P . MAWs are found to be stable for large enough ν and intermediate values of P . For different parameter values they are unstable to splitting and attractive interaction between subsequent extrema of the amplitude. Defects form from perturbed plane waves for parameter values above the SN of the corresponding MAWs. The break-down of phase chaos with average phase gradient ν 6= 0 (“wound-up phase chaos”) is thus related to these SNs. A lower bound for the break-down of wound-up phase chaos is given by the necessary presence of SNs and an upper bound by the absence of the splitting instability of MAWs.

Nonlinear dynamics of waves and modulated waves in 1D thermocapillary flows. I: General presentation and periodic solutions
We present experimental results on hydrothermal traveling-waves dynamics in long and narrow 1D channels. The onset of primary traveling-wave patterns is briefly presented for different fluid heights and for annular or bounded channels, i.e., within periodic or non-periodic boundary conditions. For periodic boundary conditions, by increasing the control parameter or changing the discrete mean-wa...
متن کاملModulated amplitude waves and defect formation in the one-dimensional complex Ginzburg–Landau equation
The transition from phase chaos to defect chaos in the complex Ginzburg–Landau equation (CGLE) is related to saddle-node bifurcations of modulated amplitude waves (MAWs). First, the spatial periodP of MAWs is shown to be limited by a maximum PSN which depends on the CGLE coefficients; MAW-like structures with period larger than PSN evolve to defects. Second, slowly evolving near-MAWs with avera...

Propagation of dust ion acoustic waves in plasmas composed of nonthermal distributed electrons and stationary dust particles is investigated. Nonlinear Schrdinger equation is derived to describe small amplitude waves, using the reduction perturbation technique. Modulation instability of dust ion acoustic waves is analysed for this system. Parametric investigation indicates that growth rate of...
متن کاملCharge gradient effects on modulated dust lattice wave packets in dusty plasma crystals
Nonlinear Dust lattice modes are studied in a hexagonal two-dimensional dusty plasma lattice, in presence of charge gradient of dust particles. In this lattice, such gradients affect nonlinear behavior of dust lattice waves. The amplitude modulation of off-plane transverse dust lattice wave packets is investigated considering the anisotropy of interactions, caused by the height-dependent char...
متن کاملThe Eckhaus instability in hexagonal patterns
The Eckhaus instability of hexagonal patterns is studied within the model of three coupled envelope equations for the underlying roll systems. The regions of instability in the parameter space are found analytically from both the phase approximation and a full system of amplitude equations. Beyond the stability limits of hexagons two different modes go unstable. Both provide symmetry breaking o...
